How Do I Find Patent Drawings

How Do I Find Patent Drawings
Patent drawings are also recognized as patent illustrations. It is graphical illustrations of an inventive theory submitted by the patent appellant. The USPTO(United States Patent and Trademark Office) asks the applicant to furnish the finest available designs wherever the uniqueness of the invention can be described better through drawings. Good illustrations make the examination process easier and it is also effective in showcasing the invention to potential licensees or customers of the technology and get the invention to market quicker.
In other words, patent drawings are how inventors describe the parts of the machine, the steps in a process or the edifice of a molecule to the people. The final drawings in the patent need to adhere to the rules set forth by the United States Patent Office.
Rules for Patent Drawing As per USPTO
The foremost formatting rules for drawings, for a patent application, are elaborated as follows:
  • Black tusche on white paper.
  • Color is seldom allowed, and only when the color is necessary to describe the invention (a separate request must be presented to the USPTO before color is allowed).
  • Photographs are only granted because it is the only practical way of demonstrating the invention.
  • The paper must be white, matte (non-shiny), flexible and strong. Writing is only permitted on one side of the paper.
  • The size of the paper must be either 21cm by 29.7cm or 21.6cm by 27.9 cm
  • The specific length of margins on each page should be 2.5 cm on the top, 2.5 cm on the left, 1.5 cm on the right, and 1.0 cm on the bottom.
  • The drawings must include as many views as needed to properly display the invention. Erupted views and blown-up partial views of specific parts of the invention may be applied. If the owner needs to show several views of the invention, the drawings must be assorted and facing the same direction on the page.
  • Drawings are favored to be in the upright form.
  • The drawing should be represented on a scale that will not be gathered when reproduced at 2/3 size. Implications like "full scale" or "1/2 scale" are not admissible since they lose their meaning with printing in a different format.
  • Shading is reinforced because it helps in understanding the invention.
  • Numbers are fancied to letters as source characters in a patent drawing. When applying letters, the English alphabet must be used.
